Kevin Outterbridge
A home grown Philly talent
Kevin Outterbridge is a gifted and talented musician. At the age of three, his father recognized that he showed an interest and aptitude for music. This burgeoning interest was nurtured and encouraged by his parents who deputized his older brother Billy, a drummer as well, to teach him how to play. As the years progressed it was discovered that he possessed a gift to play the drums and a career in music was his destiny.
By the time Kevin entered middle-school he was playing for the jazz ensemble and was later accepted into Overbrook High School’s Music Magnet Program. He performed in the jazz ensemble, concert band, percussion ensemble and orchestra. His training at Overbrook High School prepared him for performing opportunities with the All-City Orchestra and later with the Better Break Music Camp, sponsored by Settlement Music School under the direction of Mr. Lovette Hines (currently serving as the Artistic Director of The Philadelphia Cleff Club of Jazz and Performing Arts).
He was awarded a scholarship to study at the Louise Curtis Branch of Settlement Music School and become part of the first resident jazz ensemble in the school’s history, known as "Mail Order". Mail Order (also known as the Settlement Music School Jazz Sextet) was sponsored by the Rohm and Haas Corporation. Through his affiliation with Settlement Music School, Kevin (along with the other members of Mail Order) was granted the privilege and honor of performing on the main stage of the Mellon / Kool Jazz Festival, opening for legendary jazz singer, Betty Carter and saxophonist Arthur Blythe. The band also made several appearances on local television shows- City Lights with Eleanor Jean Henley, Visions with Vernon Odom, and at the Academy of Music for the birthday celebration of the late maestro, Leonard Bernstein and city venues like the Dell East and Penns Landing.
While still in high school, Kevin began playing professionally at various clubs in the Philadelphia-New Jersey –Delaware tri-state area. He studied briefly with the late “Philly” Joe Jones and legendary Count Basie drummer, Butch Ballard, Percussionist Marvin Singer and Ray Bruckno. After high school, he was accepted and began studying at the Philadelphia College of Performing Arts (now known as the University of the Arts) as a Jazz Education Major. He also attended the Philadelphia Community College where he studied with percussionist / drummer Joseph Nero.
He’s also had the honor of playing with world-renowned jazz saxophonists, Grover Washington, Jr. and Bobby Watson, Stellar Award winning Gospel artist Keith Staton and Jazz violinist John Blake, Gospel Artist / worship leader Theresa Noye, Donald Robinson and Breath of Heaven.
He can be heard on the debut recording project, Paul James and Care View-Live! ; singer/song-writer/worship leader Theresa Noye’s debut release, You Saw Me; most recently on "Christmas Presents" by Sal “The Voice” Valentinetti.
